Exploring Energy Research and Public Policy: My Summer Internship Journey

My name is Elizabeth Bielic, and I am a rising senior at Loyola University of Maryland. I am studying Political Science and Communications with a concentration in Advertising and Public Relations. I have always been interested in energy research and public policy which is why I was really drawn to APPRISE’s summer internship program.

Interning as a Research Assistant at APPRISE has been a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. I was nervous at the beginning because this was my first in-person internship in a long time due to the pandemic, but everyone at APPRISE is so helpful and friendly which helped calm my nerves. As a summer Research Assistant, I conducted surveys for The New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA) on energy usage in industrial Facilities, heat pump installations and residential audits.  My college courses in environmental politics and public policy helped me to understand this research.

Over the summer I developed many new skills. These NYSERDA projects required a significant amount of calling and research. The work improved my communication skills because I was on the phone for several hours each day. I was also able to sharpen my Excel skills as most of my research was recorded in spreadsheets.  While I consider myself to be a very organized person, APPRISE has helped me become even more systematic in my work.

My favorite part of my work at APPRISE was when I was able to conduct a phone survey and use my prior knowledge to explain the context of the research. The interviewee’s tone immediately changed when I demonstrated my understanding of the issue, and they became more interested in the research that NYSERDA was conducting.

During the summer, I was also able to learn about potential career paths I could take after graduating from college. My coworkers shared information about what they studied and how they got to where they are today. I am currently considering pursuing a master’s degree in public administration or public policy.  My conversations with APPRISE staff provided information about career opportunities that was extremely beneficial. I was comfortable to ask my colleagues about anything, career or work related. I also enjoyed attending Lunch and Learns where I learned about many other projects that APPRISE is engaged in.

Overall, I am sad that my internship is ending at APPRISE, as I have learned and grown so much from this experience. I am very grateful for this opportunity and to work beside such amazing people.
