My Summer Internship Experience at APPRISE
My name is Ashley Rohloff, and I am currently a rising sophomore at Dartmouth College where I am studying Chemical/Biochemical Engineering. I was initially drawn to APPRISE’s summer internship because of my avid interest in research. I was also curious as to how research can be conducted in a public policy setting, as opposed to the lab-based research I have become accustomed to. I was especially intrigued by how research could assist low-income households and promote energy efficiency, which is an issue that is becoming more vital in today’s world. I believed this internship would allow me to apply and expand my analytical skills, while giving me valuable exposure to how a nonprofit operates.
This summer, I had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects connected to energy-efficiency programs through the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). One of my main projects was with the NYSERDA Residential Audit Program, where we examined how residents responded to recommendations to improve energy efficiency in their household. In addition, I supported research for NYSERDA’s EmPower+ Program by reaching out to companies to gather data on the energy usage of customers across the state. I also contributed to NYSERDA’s FlexTech Program and provided support for initiatives involving the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP), which helps low-income households manage their energy bills. Through these projects, I was able to strengthen my analytical abilities by researching state-level policies, interpreting data, and evaluating program effectiveness. Just as important, I gained insight into how these programs impact individuals’ lives, and the social value of this research.
As someone who just completed their first year of college, it was eye-opening to work in a professional office environment. I learned about project development, team collaboration and the day-to-day operations of a business, which will help me in the years to come.
Although I spent only ten weeks at APPRISE, I grew immensely during my time here. This office fosters a culture of learning and support, and I never felt hesitant to ask questions or seek guidance. I remember walking into the office on my first day feeling nervous and unsure of what to expect. But I quickly found my footing thanks to this welcoming and inclusive atmosphere. Every member of staff I interacted with was eager to help me succeed.
I leave this internship with a clearer understanding of the intersection between data, public policy, and energy equity, and with a deeper appreciation for the impact of research outside of a lab. I am incredibly grateful to APPRISE for this experience, and I am excited to carry what I’ve learned into my academic and professional journey ahead.
